A message in installations
My large scale installations are usually created in response to needs within the community. They are statements in themselves - aimed to make people think about the problems; to talk about how it affects them and people around them and hopefully to instigate sufficient reaction to come up with a solution to the problems my installations address.
The below installation addresses the need for sufficient signage down at Bondi Beach for all visitors, not just international tourists.
Every year we hear of people dying; having been caught in dangerous rifts or being swept out to sea or pumbled into the rocks. Ours Australian shores are incredibly beautiful and this is what attracts tourists, but they are also extremely dangerous. This needs to be stressed to tourists. They need to learn the appropriate safe behaviour, around our shores. We need to address the problem of swimming between the flags and learn why this is paramount while enjoying the sand, sun and surf.
I address this problem in my blog, with a letter addressed to the Honourable Mayor Mr John Wakefield for Waverly Council, Sydney.
I hope you will check it out and leave your thoughts at the bottom of the article.
Thank - Ross!
